Project Description

The project aims to further the development of teaching skills in Cambodia and Sri Lanka through carefully selected partnerships with institutions of higher education and local educational organizations. Cooperation between the EU and the partner countries will focus on addressing the challenges faced in these countries, developing applicable and measurable solutions and integrating relevant ethnic and cultural considerations into the process.

After the extensive research of the University of Graz, teacher education was found to be a most crucial issue in South African schools. Due to a variety of factors, many teachers lack the proper training and supervision necessary to grow and develop to their full potential as educators. A strong emphasis on theory, for example, presents them with a lack of training when confronted with real classroom situations.

Teachers are a core element of the educational world and helping to improve the teaching skills of future and current educators in both Cambodia and Sri Lanka will make a significant contribution that will have lasing individual and societal impacts.

The overall goal of CONTESSA is to establish a teacher education program that will ultimately equip current and future teachers with the skills needed to develop a wide range of didactic methods which they can in turn use to engage, empower and educate their students.

This project will run for three years and will begin with the development of the didactic and pedagogic approaches. Using these approaches, a program targeted at the professional development of continuing teacher education will then be implemented amongst three different groups.

  1. Teacher Educators: A comprehensive train-the-trainer program will ensure teacher educators ar well versed in contemporary educational theories, approaches and methods.
  2. Student Teachers: An online-based learning program consisting of five modules focusing on he acquisition of modern and applicable teaching skills will be introduced on an OER platform.
  3. In-service Teachers: The online-modules will be adapted to fit the further education needs on in-service teachers.

To ensure broad accessibility and usability in the program countries, the didactic programs will be translated into Khmer, Singhalese and Tamil. The partners in Cambodia and Sri Lanka will also hold the crucial role of ensuring that various ethnic and country-specific requirements adaptations are considered and integrated.
