Course Description
ENGL 500 Writing for Graduate Studies
Students will study the academic English to advance and broaden their knowledge in order to be able to keep pace with the requirements of the Graduate School assignments and progressive work. The course enables them to understand how human being utilizes oral and written language to interact with each other in the learning environments. Furthermore, students will do their best to explore different styles of academic writing and develop basic skills in conducting academic research based on comparison and analysis of various case studies. Significantly, students will build on their foundation knowledge through their own research in various topics assigned and verified by professor of the course and strength in an academic essay writing style.
LAW 501 Cambodian Laws in Context
This course gives a general overview of contemporary laws in Cambodia. It covers the nature and sources of law, hierarchy of laws, legal and judicial systems, constitutional law, substantive and procedural civil laws, substantive and procedural criminal laws, alternative dispute resolutions, administrative law, employment and labor law, intellectual property law, environmental law, women and law, right of indigenous people, and relation between Cambodian laws and international law. The course aims to provide students with opportunity to review and discuss various legal topics and relation between existing laws and human rights.
NATS 510 Global Environment Awareness
This course introduces students to concepts and theories related to world environment. It discusses a natural process of an ecological system, economic and social development in equilibrium to environmental conditions. Importantly, it brings updates about human activities and environmental pollution causing major problems from draught, inundation, desertification, contaminated soil, air and water to ozone depletion. The course also raises awareness of essence in environmental preservation through various debates about climate change, natural resource protection and conservation and sustainable development from an environmental perspective.
RESR 525 Research Methodology
This course targets at offering skills and techniques in research to the course followers. The major themes with regard to the course include problem statement development, hypothesis formulation and the practical aspects of research methods to attain the intended and desired research outcomes. It, of course, looks into research proposal, a research scheme and literature review. Essentially, it discusses the citation of documents or the ways to tell the sources of information, surveys, interviews and questionnaires. Moreover, it introduces a comparative aspect of research methods from social discipline to science and business on the basis of the use of the distinctive use of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Ultimately, the course members are expected to be able to develop their own themes and conduct the research for the class, together with the presentation of the written report from research findings.
COM 502 Fundamentals of Public Relations
The study of public relations as a management science. This course focus on such areas as employee communications, media relations, investor relations, governmental relations, issues management, and community relations.
COM 503 Mass Communications: Theories and Practice
This course is designed to develop an understanding of the interrelationship and future of the mass media in a rapidly changing world. The course provides an overview of the traditional mass media—print, broadcast, film—as well as the related fields of advertising, photography, public relations, and publishing. The course will also examine the impact of new media technologies on these respective fields
MGT 530 Governance, Management and Leadership Dynamics
This is an upper level course of management and leadership which looks at how managers and leaders behave and make a decision to deal with an organizational change and a crisis situation.
Students will be expected to actively participate in the debate on studies relevant to the themes such as advanced management skills, leadership dynamics and leadership styles. The subtheme on Effective Governance is also introduced for the course followers in order for them to increase an understanding about responsibility, decision making and accountability in the field of management and leadership. A combination of readings and class discussions with hands-on exercises will familiarize students with the variety of approaches one might take to management and leadership. To advance the students’ knowledge in the discipline, case studies on corporations, business firms and public institutions are incorporated into the course.
COM 540 Radio and Television Station Management
This course provides an overview of the skills, responsibilities, and objectives of management in a radio or television station. Topics include procedures and problems pertaining to daily operations; the respective roles of the programming, engineering, news, business, and sales departments and their responsibilities to the station; legal responsibilities; and the economics of station management
COM 550 Broadcast Programming
Purposes, philosophies, and methods of obtaining, developing, scheduling, launching, and evaluating programming for electronic media. Topics covered include commercial radio and TV networks and stations, cable TV, public radio and TV, direct broadcast satellite, and the Internet.
COM 560 Strategic Communications Management
Generating public support through effective communications is as essential to the success of nonprofit and public organizations as it is to for-profit organizations. Concepts and skills developed in this course will help students approach communications in a way that builds commitment to their organization’s mission, strategic initiatives, and fundraising activities.
COM 562 Cross Cultural Communication
This course examines the nature of cross cultural differences, intercultural contacts, and other forms of human communication and interaction. The course will focus on the cultural elements inherent in cross cultural communication, as well as the role of linguistics in helping us understand how languages code ideas and express actions differently.
MGT 570 Negotiations and Conflict Resolution
This interdisciplinary course examines various formal and informal methods of conflict resolution, which are often used in business, law, diplomacy, politics, and in everyday life. The course also focuses on developing effective strategies and techniques in negotiation for reaching different agreements. It emphasizes economic, cultural, psychological, and ethical areas essential to conflict resolution and negotiation. COM 571 Principles of Publishing
This course stresses the basic principles of online and print media publishing. Topics include editorial principles and practices, production, marketing problems, distribution methods, and informational systems and techniques. The impact and growth of digital media will also be examined.
COM 576 Financial Aspects of Publishing
Provides a general overview of the various financial elements of publishing. Along with an overview of basic accounting principles, financial statement analysis, and the concept of internal control, the course will also focus on such issues as revenues, costs, and financial practices of book, magazine, and newspaper publishers. Particular attention will be placed on the various challenges publishers face in Cambodia.
COM 580 Film and Video Production Planning and Management
.The course emphasizes the practical aspects of the producer’s job in all the stages of development, pre-production, production, and post production---from story selection, shooting, to the completion of editing. Topics include the producer’s relationship with the writer, director, and other key personnel; script breakdown and scheduling; budgeting; and location vs. studio shooting.
COM 585 Film and Video Financing, Distribution, and Marketing
This course will examine various methods used in the financing, marketing, and distribution of films and video in the domestic and international market. Topics discussed include potential sources of financing, production accounting, participation, royalties and residuals, and licensing.
COM 587 Graduate Seminar on Current Issues in Media
This course is designed and offered to provide students with up to date knowledge about key and burning issues, ethical challenges, themes and developments in and related to mass communication and national and international media systems. It provides the opportunity for students to examine relevant media theories, research approaches and methods, and media policies.
COM 505 Digital Technologies and Media
This course examines issues related to digital media communication, especially in its impact on the cultural, economic, social, and ethical dimensions of local markets and global communities. This course will also examine the impact of new technologies on the operations of media organizations.
COM 513 Advanced Seminar on Social Media
This course explores the ever-changing world of social media and its impact on the public relations profession, and how social media has changed the way communication strategists approach their work. It focuses on understanding how organizations, including corporations, nonprofits, and the government sector use various social media tools. Search engine marketing, mobile communications, and viral campaigns are also examined.
COM 517 Media Promotion and Marketing
This course introduces students to the techniques used in effectively conveying a media organization’s messages to the public. Specific promotional and publicity techniques are examined and analyzed.
COM 531 Group Behavior and Mass Communication
This course centers on the media’s impact (or lack of impact) on the relatively unstructured, spontaneous, unpredictable, temporary, and usually irrational aspects of human behavior, including such social behavior as rumors, fads, fashions, crazes, panics, escapes, riots, protests, collective delusions, migrations, and disasters
COM 555 Public Speaking
This is a skill learning course designed to help students become better communicators. Students will learn how to speak effectively in public settings, and will also learn why some people are effective public speakers, while others are not. The goal of the course is to provide both the how and why to help students become better consumers of public communication.
COM 570 Digital Arts Production and Management
This course examines the production process and management of digital multimedia. Students will investigate and produce projects by researching various uses of digital media, with special emphasis on the production process of communication.
